| Cow herd health is under the direction of Dr. Sean McCoole of the
Cedar Ridge Veterinary Clinic in Atchinson, Kansas.
All cows receive a Lepto-Vibro vaccination and are wormed each Spring
and Fall. They are poured for lice in January. Prior to breeding
in the Spring they receive a modified live IBR/Pl3/BVD/BRSV vaccination.
Each cow in the herd has been blood tested and certified free of
BVD.
Breeding season is from May 10 to July 10 each
year. Pregnancy testing is done through Biopryn Blood tests each
fall. Conception rates run 94% with 70% of the calves born in the
first 21 days of calving season. Heifers calve in the barn. Heifer
assistance runs about 5%.
Cow/calf pairs spend summers on native Kansas Flint Hills pastures.
Bred cows are wintered on a silage based ration under the direction
of Dave McClellan, our consulting nutritionist, prior to being moved
to calving pastures in February. |
