Joe and Norma Hoagland, owners of J&N Ranch, Leavenworth, Kansas
staged their 17th annual Production Sale, the offering primarily
consisting of Black Herefords, February 13, one day after the annual
ABHA Membership Meeting. Reminiscent of last year’s
sale, there was again standing room only for the overflow crowd as
attendees came and purchased from 15 states ranging in far away states
from South Dakota to Texas and Virginia to Utah. Auctioneer
Tommy Barnes, Montgomery, Alabama cried the sale and quickly determined
that the crowd was anxious for Black Herefords. The evidence
was in the totals; this year’s sale sold 96 lots for $3,044,
$600 per lot more than last year’s sale. There were 78
internet participants in the sale accounting for the purchase of
nine animals from the offering.
The high selling lot was the bred heifer
JN Baldee 841. The
homozygous black March 2008 heifer was bred to the two-year-old JN
Balder 7130, a high performance bull with a 3.0 lb, a 57 lb., and
a 106 lb. birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight EPD, respectively. The
841 heifer was without a doubt the crowd’s favorite, as her
price passed $6,000 quickly with at least 6 breeders placing their
hands in the air. When the price reached $9,000, the bidding
settled down to Dimitri Matagaras, Iron Lake Ranch, Dallas, Texas
and the partnership of J Bar B Cattle Company, Grandview, Texas and
Triple L Ranch, Mexia, Texas. When the bidding stopped, Iron
Lake Ranch became the owner of the heifer with a sale price of $10,000.
This is the fourth year in a row that Iron Lake Ranch purchased the
high-selling heifer from a J&N sale. After the “841” female
calf arrives, she will be flushed to the Hereford bull CCC GG Wallace
9177W ET, just admitted for use in the ABHA. Iron Lake
Ranch also purchased the bull JN Balder 9487 for $4,750. This
prospect had a weaning ratio of 112, a yearling ratio of 107, a birth
EPD of +2.7, a gain on test of 3.33 and was homozygous black.
The partnership of J Bar B Cattle Company,
owned by Jim and Bob Watson, and Triple L Ranch, owned by Bobby
and Jared Lide, bid $8,500 for the second high priced animal. This partnership bull, JN
Balder 9498, a homozygous black bull, had a weaning ratio of 107,
a yearling ratio of 107, a gain on test of 3.61 lb. and a birth weight
EPD of +1.6. The partnership of Triple L and J Bar B purchased
one of the good bred heifers when they became owners of JN Baldee
829, a homozygous black heifer with excellent performance and near
perfect conformation for $5,500.
Before the day sale was finished, Bobby and
Jared Lide purchased five bred heifers, one for $4,750, two for
$4,250, one for $3,600 and one for $2,200 with an average of $3,810
on the five. Triple
L also purchased a second Black Hereford bull for $2,600. The
Triple L bull, JN Balder 9432, had a weaning index of 111, a yearling
ratio of 105, a gain on test of 3.22 lb. and milk EPD of +16. The
five Lide females all had good growth EPDs, above average milk EPDs
and moderate to low birth EPDs. With these cattle added to
their herd, Triple L Ranch became the volume buyer of the sale.
J Bar B Cattle Company purchased two homozygous
black bulls, JN Balder 9622 for $5,000 and a second bull, JN Balder
9625 for $2,600. JN
Balder 9622 had a 79 lb. actual birth weight and a below average
birth weight EPD making him a likely candidate to use on heifers.
J Bar B added two bred heifers to their herd inventory for a $2,175
average.
Smithson Farms, LaPlata, Missouri, owned
by Danny and Erin Smithson, repeat buyers of Black Herefords from
J&N Ranch, purchased two
bulls, one for $8,000 and a second for $3,500. Smithson’s
first selection was JN Balder 9406, a homozygous black bull with
a yearling ratio of 116, the highest on test gain of 4.89 lb. per
day, a milk EPD of +14 and a scrotal circumference of 41 cm. Smithson’s
second bull was JN Balder 9135, a homozygous black bull with the
sale’s highest weaning weight EPD, the second highest yearling
weight EPD and ratios of 100 or more.
Robert/Elizabeth Hazelgrove, Farmville, Virginia,
owners of Hors du Monde Black Herefords, purchased JN Balder 9748,
a thick meaty son of JN Balder 7130 with the sale’s second lowest actual
birth weight and balanced performance all the way around. The
Hazelgrove’s selection was a homozygous black bull purchased
over the internet through DVAuction for $7,500.
Two of the Black Hereford bulls sold for
$6,000. One sold
to Birkholtz Farms, Willow Lake, South Dakota. Birkholtz selected
JN Balder 9479, an outstanding individual that had the highest yearling
weight, the second highest weaning weight, the second highest ADG
on test and a below average birth weight EPD. Birkholtz purchased
the second high selling bull in the 2009 J&N Sale for $5,500. Square
C Farms, owned by Lee Campbell, Windsor, Illinois bought the other
$6,000 bull, JN Balder 9522. This homozygous black bull had
balanced performance and was average or above average for all performance
traits.
Three additional bulls sold for $5,000 each. The first was
JN Balder 9702 purchased by Ground Zero Farms, Watts, Oklahoma. Ground
Zero’s bull had a weaning ratio of 107, a yearling ratio of
108, an ADG 3.67 lb., a 40 cm. scrotal circumference and was homozygous
black. Ground Zero added two homozygous black heifers to their
herd as well, JN Baldee 835 for $5,750 and JN Baldee 836 for $5,250. Ground
Zero has been a repeat customer for J&N Ranch.
McCutcheon Farms, owned by Randall and Pam
McCutcheon, DePauw, Indiana selected JN Balder 9519, a homozygous
black bull for $5,000. McCutcheon
Farms have sold Black Herefords to breeders in several states and
wanted another herd sire to give their customers some new genetics.
New ABHA member and Black Hereford breeder
Mark Baxter, Baxter Angus, Rockham, South Dakota purchased JN Balder
9630 for $5,000. Baxter’s
bull had a 2.7 birth, 44 weaning, an 82 yearling, a 17 milk and 39
milk plus growth EPD.
Fourteen of the 30 bred heifers sold for
$4,000 or more. Grover
Prather and his son Bud Prather, Versailes, Indiana, new Black Hereford
breeders, purchased three heifers: JN Baldee 855 for $5,250, JN Baldee
813 for $4,250 and JN Baldee 849 for $4,250.
Maquoketa Embryo, owned by Dr. Don Yanda,
Maquoketa, Iowa purchased two promising prospects, JN Baldee 816
and JN Baldee 843 for $4,750 each.
Curt Russell, Petersburg, Indiana, a new Black Hereford breeder,
purchased six Black Hereford bred heifers for an average price of
$3,458.
Joe and Norma Hoagland were pleased with
their sale results and are looking forward to their next annual
production sale in February 2011.
